Cardinals Chris Carpenter Will Not Pitch During 2013

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-- The St. Louis Cardinals have announced that pitcher Chris Carpenter will not pitch during the 2013 season.

Carpenter had nerve surgery in his right shoulder early last season. He was able to return to the mound in September 2012.

Carpenter said on Friday that after numerous attempts of throwing in the bullpen, he is still experiencing numbness in his shoulder and neck. He said he no longer feels he can continue to throw.

Cardinals General Manager John Mozeliak said that Carpenter returning is very unlikely right now, but he did not mention the word "retirement".

Carpenter will be put on the disabled list at this point.

Former Cardinals pitcher Kyle Lohse is still a free agent.
