CHESTERFIELD, MO (KTVI) – Beginning Monday, drivers in Chesterfield may face traffic and lengthy detours because of a drainage project.

Olive Street Road is shut down from Chesterfield Airport Road to Centaur Road, while contractors install a new drainage system for St. Louis Premium Outlets, a new outlet mall being built on Olive Street Road.  The project could take up to two weeks.

To get around the road block, drivers will have to take Long Road to Wildhorse Creek Road and then South Eatherton Road, or take Chesterfield Airport Road, depending on one’s destination.

Not all drivers were aware about the closure, including Dane Dessieux. He says, “I came from O’Fallon, and I got cut off by the road stop, and I tried to get through it and you can’t get through it, so I had to come around this way and take Wildhorse Creek.  It really is an inconvenience.”

Chesterfield resident Andrew Keys says the detour will make his mother’s commute more difficult: “If she has to drive all the way around, every single neighborhood’s gonna be going the same way, so it’s gonna take another 20 minutes to get to work when she lives two miles from work.”

While the detour is causing congestion for drivers, that traffic is a good thing for businesses along the detour route.

The manager of the Imo’s Pizza at the corner of Long Road and Wildhorse Creek says business is already picking up.

Manager Steve Gandlmayr explains, “There is a little bit heavier traffic; we’ve got quite a few people coming in for pick-ups right now.” He adds, “A lot of people stuck in traffic are ordering also, like I said that’s good for business.”

According to St. Louis County Public Works, the 90-foot long drainage system will be made up of 60-inch pipes under the roadway.
