ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-- A milestone was made Thursday on construction of the new Mississippi River Bridge. The new bridge has connected to land on the Missouri side.

A steel beam was lowered into place that connects the bridge and the approach from the near north side of St. Louis.

A second beam on the other side is expected to be in place in a couple of days.

MoDOT says construction is ahead of schedule.  The new Mississippi River Bridge should open in early 2014.
