Niece Charged In Ferguson Brutal Stabbing Death

FERGUSON, MO (KTVI)- A woman is brutally murdered in Ferguson and the prime suspect is a close relative.

Police say the victim is 60-year-old Bernice Winston.

Winston was found dead in her apartment just before 8 Thursday morning by a building maintenance man who noticed her front door was open. She had been stabbed numerous times.

The apparent suspect, a family member, was still inside when police arrived. Police say Rhonda Rhodes, 50, was sitting in a chair like nothing had happened. Rhodes lived with her aunt.

Neighbors describe Bernice Winston as a kind woman who helped others. Neighbors say they saw the suspect leave with police and said she is the niece of the victim who had a history of mental issues.

Rhodes is being held in the St. Louis County Jail. She has been charged with murder in the first degree and armed criminal action. Bond was set at $250,000.

This marks the first murder of the year in Ferguson.
