The Cardinals got the worst news they could have imagined concerning shortstop Rafael Furcal’s ailing right elbow on Thursday morning. Dr. James Andrews confirmed that Furcal needs ligament replacement surgery on his elbow. Furcal went to see Andrews on Wednesday for a second opinion on his ailing elbow. Furcal first injured the elbow on August 30, 2012. Furcal rehabbed the elbow all winter, but when he came to Spring Training, he aggravated the elbow throwing and had to be shut down. Dr. Andrews will perform the surgery on Furcal. The recovery time from the surgery Furcal will have is 6 to 8 months, thus ending his 2013 season before it ever began.
