BELLEVILLE, IL. (KTVI) - Illinois drivers will no longer be able to use Illinois 13 through Belleville.  The Illinois Department of Transportation started a bridge replacement project on Illinois 15 Monday.

The bridges cross over Illinois 13.

The section of Illinois 13 will be closed until next winter, according to I-DOT officials.

"I will believe it when it is actually done," Randy McCammon said. "Then I will enjoy it."

The bridges are in "desperately need to be replaced," according to I-DOT officials.

During the first phase of the project, the Eastbound bridge on Illinois 15 will be replaced. The westbound bridge will remain open, but traffic will be reduced to one lane.

"That will make my drive a little more tough, but I can handle it," McCammon said. "We need new bridges here."

During the second phase, the westbound bridge will be replaced. The new eastbound bridge will be open for traffic for one lane in each direction.
