ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - Forest Park Community College will hold drills to help staff and students face armed intruders and other emergencies.

Campus police shut down Highlander Drive at Oakland early Wednesday morning. Organizers planned to hold the drill at the Mildred E. Bastian Theatre. They want to make sure lay people could help save lives, even if first responders couldn’t get inside the school immediately.

Forest Park Community College has an Emergency Response team that will practice facing several scenarios, including an armed intruder. First aid, triage and evacuations are all part of the practice. If it sounds like these jobs really belong to professional first responders, just think about an earthquake, tornado, or police standoff. Paramedics cannot get to victims, immediately. So, it is up to lay people to try to keep those victims alive until help can come.

St. Louis City Police, Fire, E.M.S. Emergency Management, and Mobile Command will be at the drill. Members of the FBI will be there, too. The drill goes from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday.
