ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - a south St. Louis homeowner shoots a burglary suspect who police say was trying to get into his house.

The homeowner apparently heard the suspect messing with his front door knob. That's when the homeowner opened the front door and confronted him.  It happened just after 1:00 a.m. Wednesday.

Police say the 32-year-old suspect tried to get into the home after the homeowner opened the door.  There was a bit of a struggle between the 47-year-old homeowner and the suspect.

That's when investigators say the homeowner shot the suspect once in the calf.  Investigators say the man's stepdaughter called police to report the incident. When police arrived, they initially couldn't find the suspect.  But then they followed a blood trail and found the man a block away in the street full of blood.

He was taken to an area hospital where he is listed in stable condition. Police say the homeowner was not arrested and was not hurt.
