SAN JOSE, CA (KTVI)-The Saint Louis University Billikens lost to the Oregon Ducks Saturday night, 74-57,eliminating them from the NCAA tournament. A win would have sent SLU to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time in school history.
The team that fought the loss of a dynamic coach to take the Atlantic Ten Conference championship ran head first into the Oregon Ducks defense Saturday night and stalled.
Fans jammed local watering holes near the campus, cheering each Billiken basket. Their team had the number four seed in the regional in San Jose, CA. Oregon held the number twelve seed.
But the Bills failed to counter their opponent’s defense and fought from behind most of the game. Their fans left disappointed but still proud their Bills had accomplished so much.
"We're still proud of them," said a student after the team lost its second round NCAA game to Oregon 74 to 57.
The SLU Billikens won national attention reaching the Top 25 list toward the end of the regular season. Their success in the face of adversity created a buzz on campus that students said they appreciated.
2013 was the Billikens’ eighth trip to the NCAA Tournament.
