(KTVI)-The Easter weekend began with a vigil at St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican.  Pope Francis led the mass Saturday evening where he baptized four adult converts to the Catholic Church.

The new pontiff celebrated Good Friday by praying for peace in the Middle East and for everyone torn apart by conflict.

The pope will deliver an Easter Sunday mass Sunday before thousands of worshipers in St. Peter's Square.

Hundreds of worshipers from all over the world attended the Easter Vigil service in Jerusalem Saturday evening in the Holy Land. Led by friars of the Franciscan order, the Easter Vigil procession entered the Church of the Holy Sepulcher where Christians believe Jesus was crucified and buried.

The Easter Vigil is held the night before Easter Sunday and begins the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ after his crucifixion and death on the cross on Good Friday.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre has been an important pilgrimage destination since the 4th century and is considered the holiest Christian location in the world.
