SMITHFIELD, NC (FOX NEWS) - A woman's body is found in a car, days after it ran off the road into a ravine. Authorities say the state trooper who investigated the accident has been placed on administrative duty with pay pending the outcome of an investigation. The woman has been identified as Carolyn Ann Watkins, 62.

Trooper MD Williams, who's a nine-year highway patrol veteran, filed an accident report after Watkins' 2000 Pontiac was discovered down an embankment about five miles outside Smithfield last Friday. Williams reported the accident as a hit and run and said the driver, Carolyn Watkins, was not at the scene. But authorities say Watkins was in the car the entire time. Algernon Parker says the news of his mother's death is just too much to take.

The family says Watkins was perfectly healthy, and they don't know what could have caused her to drive off the road. An autopsy is pending.
