(KTVI) – In Batgirl #19, the first openly transgender character in a mainstream comic book was revealed, DC Comics tweeted.

The character is Alysia Yeoh, the roommate of main character Barbara Gordon. Writer Gail Simone has wanted to bring the character in the story.

“Those characters exist [and] that’s great, but I wanted to have trans characters who aren’t fantasy-based. And I feel like there’s a lot there yet to do,” Simone said to Wired.

Batgirl #19 can be picked up at your local comic book shop.
