ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – Lightning from the early Tuesday morning thunder storms struck a tree behind a church on Cardinal, just south of Chouteau. The lightning was so powerful, wood from the tree was found 100 yards away.

The lightning jumped from the tree to the back of the church’s office building, striking a plumbing vent stack and catching the building on fire. When firefighters arrived on the scene, flames were engulfing the back of the building.

Large branches from the tree fell, snapping a power line.

It appears no one was in the building at the time.  The church might have been moving out of the building.
