O’FALLON, IL (KTVI) – The O’Fallon High School Smiley campus was locked down from 12:00pm to 1:00pm on Wednesday because police found hazardous materials at the home of a student. School administrators questioned the student and his friends about the materials. The school officials did not find any evidence that the student intended to harm anyone.

During the lockdown students and school employees were placed in classrooms and the cafeteria. The Scott Air Force Base K-9 team sniffed for bombs on campus.

Parents and staff were notified of the situation by e-mail and phone calls.

It is not clear why the school was locked down. In a release from the High School administrators said they, “Will always error on the side of caution as the safety of students and employees is our top priority.”

FBI is now involved with the investigation with St. Clair County law enforcement.
