SPRINGFIELD, IL. (CNN) – Illinois is one step closer to passing a medical marijuana bill.

The state house approved the measure in a close 61-57 vote.

Now, the senate must weigh in.

Several cities in Illinois have decriminalized the possession of marijuana, opting to ticket violators instead of taking them to jail.

Seventeen states and the District of Columbia have approved some form of marijuana use for medical purposes.
