ST. CHARLES, MO (KTVI) – Prosecutors in St. Charles County say a St. Charles man is responsible for the death of an unborn child.

Paul Joseph Murphy, 52, was charged with First Degree Involuntary Manslaughter on Tuesday.  According to the indictment,  on March 16, 2013, Murphy was driving on the wrong side of the road on West Clay Street when he crashed head-on into another vehicle.

The mother, a male driver and a three-year-old child were all taken to an area hospital. The woman was 19 weeks pregnant and gave birth to a still born baby.

Authorities believe Murphy had taken a benzodiazpine, a drug used to treat conditions like anxiety and insomnia and that his driving was impaired by the medication.

Murphy is also charged with three counts of Second Degree Assault.  He could face up to 36 years in prison if convicted on all the charges.

Bond is set at $50,000.
