CHESTERFIELD, MO (KTVI) - The name “Chesterfield” remains a mystery. Many of the residents declared “I live in Chesterfield” before Chesterfield was Chesterfield.

Making it a city took convincing enough residents to vote in favor of it. They met that challenge in 1988 and Chesterfield became its own municipality.

The city faced an even bigger challenge on July 31, 1993. A rising Missouri River broke through the Monarch levee and flooded 4,000 acres.

It’s hard to believe, but this summer will mark the 20th anniversary of the Great Flood of '93 in Chesterfield. But it also marks the 25th anniversary of Chesterfield as a city.
