ST. LOUIS, MO. (KTVI) – For Joe Abernathy, these are the refrigerators that really kicked the Cardinals recycling efforts into high gear.

'You know we put it in trays and there`s several hundred pounds each night that probably gets donated, so it varies depending on how the game goes and such,' says Joe Abernathy the Vice President of Operations for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Your favorite ball park food is feeding the hungry.

Now the EPA is recognizing the redbirds for taking part in their food recovery program.
More than 27 tons of unused food from concession stands at Busch have been donated to operation food search .

'So the nachos that were not noshed and the brat that was not brought are not only getting into the belly of someone in need,' says Patrick Clark standing on the third base line at Busch Stadium.  'But it`s also staying out of someplace else altogether.'

'Just six years ago with the amount of trash that we generated, we sent over 200 tons of trash to local landfills,' says Abernathy.  'When we started this program.  And this food donation program has helped us reduce that number by almost a third.'

The EPA's program encourages clubs to practice leaner purchasing and direct surplus food onto the tables of those in need.

'Operation Food Search put a value of well over 100-thousand dollars for the food that we donated to them for their use,' says Abernathy.  'So we're pretty excited.'

You might call this a win-win for everyone, on the field and off.
