Update: An adult male is in custody, in connection to the murder of 13-year-old Clayton Veninga.

GRANITE CITY, IL (KTVI) - A Granite City, Illinois, family is in mourning and police are searching for suspects after a 13-year-old boy is shot and killed.

The mother of Clayton Veninga V, 13, says her son was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

She says Clayton loved sports especially football.

Investigators say Veninga was shot in the side and killed around 9:25pm Wednesday.

Clayton was apparently hanging out with some friends on the porch of a home on Cleveland in Granite City not far from his own home when shots rang out.

Two of Clayton’s friends who were with him tell us everyone scattered when the shooting started.

We’re told Clayton, who was bleeding heavily from the gunshot wound to his side, tried to make it to his friend’s house just a few doors down for help.

Just as he arrived, he collapsed in a driveway.

Caleb Brousseau is his friend, “We turned him over and that’s when we saw the bullet wound in his side and blood all the way.”

EMS crews rushed him to Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City, but he died from his injuries.

Blaine Buchanan is also the victim’s friend, “I’m hurt, hurt real bad that was one of my best friends and now he’s gone.”

Granite City police say they are working leads, but as of now there are no suspects in custody.

“Some people have asked if this was a drive by shooting we don’t believe a car was involved in this were looking at several leads,” said Major Jeff Connor with the Granite City police department. “I think maybe because this is a 13 year old victim we’re getting some calls from the public and we appreciate that and we just want that to continue.”

Clayton’s mother believes a neighborhood feud between kids led to the shooting and Clayton just happened to be there when the bullets flew.

One friend said, “He never really had any problems with anybody.” Another friend added, “He never messed with nobody, he was a good kid.”

Clayton’s friend Mahmoud Ramlawi said, “This is a cold world and whoever did this needs justice and they need to serve a long time in jail and think about exactly what they did.”  Joey Nguyen ran to give Clayton aid for his gunshot wound, “He’s gone all because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Clayton’s mom says there will be a candlelight vigil Thursday at 7:00pm for Clayton where he lost his life.
