MANCHESTER, MO (KTVI)- Many got up extra early Sunday morning to make their way to West County for a big giveaway. For the seventh consecutive year, St. Louis-based The Staenberg Group hosted its annual tulip giveaway. More than 50,000 free tulip and daffodil bulbs from their managed properties were given away.

The event was supposed to start at 8:00am but people began showing up and digging through the pile as early as 5:30am.

"I thought they weren’t gonna bring the truck until 8 and then dump, but they already had the piles ready and we had at it," Stella Kaemmere, one of the first to arrive told us..

But the early birds clearly upset some who came closer to the scheduled start time.

"We got up a little early on Mother’s Day to come out and get Tulips," a disappointed Diane Brunts said.  "We thought we can get three or four bulbs to take to our mom’s house to plant there because she loves them, but yeah, they’re gone."

The 50 thousand bulbs came from malls and office properties across the area.  Each year, when those buildings have tulips in the spring, the bulbs have to be dug up for summer landscaping.

"We used to put them in a landfill or we composted them," Shelby Bunge from the Brickman Group Landscaping  told us.  But the Staneberg Group, they like to give back to the community and thought this would be a  much better thing to do with these bulbs than dump them."

There were plenty of moms on hand this Mother's Day morning, though not everyone had the help you might expect.  Jenn Snethen's kids were home with her husband, all of them still sleeping.

"I don’t need them dirty!  I’d rather be dirty!  It’s easier.  Then I’m not chasing them around.  This is my Mother’s Day. My day in the flowers."
