Swansea Man Surrenders After 4-Hour Standoff

SWANSEA, IL (KTVI) – A Swansea, Illinois, man is in custody after about a four-hour standoff Thursday morning at his Swansea home.

Police identify the suspect as Dougford Butler, 29.

Investigators say the entire incident started with Butler committing a home invasion in Belleville around 6:45am Thursday.

Police tell us Butler forced his way into the home of a friend of a woman who he had a relationship with in the past.

Cops say Butler attacked the woman he had a past relationship with, injuring her in the head and face. She went to a hospital for treatment but police expect her to be ok.

We’re told Butler would not come out when police went to his home on Brackett Street in Swansea to arrest him in connection with the home invasion. That’s when the standoff started around 7:15am.

The SWAT team was called in, including a negotiator.

Police say the negotiator made contact with Butler and he peacefully surrendered about four hours later.

Butler is a facing a home invasion charge for the incident in Belleville Thursday morning.

A second person was also in the home and was taken into custody with Butler. Police say that person was not immediately charged with anything and likely will not face any charges at all.
