ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO. (KTVI) - The sounds of drills and saws are one that Ameren workers and customers will hear for days.
It’s all part of the process as more than 2,000 Ameren workers do what they can to get power restored. The 95,000 customers affected on Friday has been reduced to 53,000 to across the St. Louis metro.
FOX 2 got an inside view and discovered there is more to the process than meets the eye. Ameren official Patrick Smith says the first step is to assess the damage, safely restore hospitals and nail down staffing details.
"There’s a material factor a manpower factor you have to do certain precautions in the state of Missouri. We are digging holes in the ground dealing with energized conductors making sure they are denergized. We are also dealing with the jagged edges of the wood and glass all mangled from the storm." Smith said.
St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley and Berkeley Mayor Ted Hoskins joined Ameren representatives and toured one of the worst hit areas in Berkeley.
One of the affected buildings is the Boeing plant on at Forest Avenue. Dooley says he is thankful that there were no fatalities. Most of the damage was to the power infrastructures and poles. Workers from Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas and Illinois are also helping to detangle wires and limbs.
Crews are replacing more than two- hundred 70 -foot poles, each pole has a crew of three and it can take a day to get a replacement up and running.
Ameren officials say power should be restored to all of its customers by Tuesday and urge everyone to take caution when wires are in your path.
