(KTVI) – Actor Michael Douglas is speaking out about what he calls the cause of his throat cancer: oral sex.

The actor told “The Gaurdian” newspaper that he blames cunnilingus for his 2010 diagnosis.  According to the Associated Press, he told the newspaper his cancer had been caused by having contracted human papillomavirus, or HPV, which lead to his cancer.

But some doctors say while the sexual transmitted infection may have contributed to Douglas’ cancer, it may be difficult to pinpoint it as a cause because Douglas was a smoker and drinker, two other common causes of oral cancer.

“There are often a number of factors, genetic, environmental, viral, that could be playing a role,” said Dr. Michael Brady, a sexual health doctor.  He calls the risk of getting cancer from HPV is low and that people should not change their sexual practices.

Douglas is married to actress Catherine Zeta-Jones.
