Oops! $22,000 Online Banking Mistake Empties Account

FREDERICKSBURG, VA (WTVR) – Many people have turned to online banking as a convenient way of paying bills. For one Fredericksburg woman, however, trying to pay her Verizon bill online has been anything but.

While trying to pay her $226.52 bill she opened a confirmation e-mail from her bank, Wells Fargo. The confirmation communication had the amount withdrawn at 100 times more than it should have been.

“When I saw the amount, I almost had a heart attack,” the woman said from the front porch of her home. Instead of $226.52,  the amount listed was $22,652.00– about $21,000 more than the woman had in her account.

She then found herself in a game of phone tag. Each company insisting she call the other. With little results, she turned to the local TV news station for help.
