CHESTERFIELD, MO (KTVI)-- Deer got inside the Chesterfield Sam’s store in an effort to avoid the flood water.
Shoppers at the Sam’s Club got more than they bargained for Friday when three deer rushed right into the front door.
At around 4:45 Chesterfield police were called to the Chesterfield Commons Sam’s Club and walked into what some called a scene from wild kingdom.
According to reports, at least 2 does and a fawn ran into the front door past greeters and into the isles. One doe panicked and immediately ran out while the other two ran through the store. The fawn escaped and the last doe ran to the back of the store and was held captive by employees in the toilet paper isles.
A non-profit group called Bi-Estate Wildlife came in and got the last deer out of the back of the store 2 hours after the call.
Customer Julie McCawley says one of the deer jumped over her shopping cart.
"I wasn`t afraid of it really but they get in a panic so you want to get out of their way. I stepped back and put my basket in front of me and it just ran by and jumped over the basket.. It went out the back door someone held the fire escape door for it," said McCawley.
Don Nord with Bi-State Wildlife Hotline says deer encounters in populated areas are more common than people think.
"We opened up the exit door and it ran out it was fine. It didn`t have any injuries or anything it ran real good. Right now I guess the flood water is pushing a lot of them out more into the subdivisions and everything," Said Nord.
Unfortunately the deer that ran out front was hit by a car and killed in the parking lot. We’re also told that there were no injuries inside of the store and that employees did a good job of keeping the deer away from customers.
The store continued to do business as usual.
