CASEYVILLE, IL. (KTVI) – The St. Clair County Coroner has confirmed that Police Chief J.D. Roth has died of a self inflicted gun shot wound. He was found by his girlfriend on the back patio of his home. He lived on the 9700 block of Abalon in Fairview Heights.

People who knew Roth got worried last night when he began sending them distressing texts.

But a neighbor says he saw Roth working in his yard on Wednesday and everything seemed normal.

"Very shocked," said Ed Miller, Roth`s next door neighbor for seven years. "It still has not really set in yet because when you know somebody like that it is just hard and the things he`s been going through, just hard."

Roth was suspended in March and charged in May with Official Misconduct related to his personal use of a truck seized in a drug bust, and luggage he bought with money from the village. Roth also allegedly ordered officers to let his girlfriend off for a felony drunk driving charge.

City leaders got a letter from the St. Clair County State`s Attorney essentially saying Roth could no longer be trusted. Mayor George Chance fired him in March.

Roth had been on the Caseyville police force for 22 years and its chief for about a decade.

Interim chief Sgt. Frank Monroe issued a written statement:

"The members of the Caseyville Police Department and I'm sure our community members as a whole are saddened by the death of retired Police Chief J.D. Roth. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and close friends."
