(CNN) — An American Airlines plane was diverted to Denver International Airport on Friday because the crew reported smoke in the cockpit, an airline spokeswoman told CNN.

Flight 1070, a Boeing 757 carrying 183 passengers, departed Seattle at 11:58 p.m. Thursday for Miami, and the crew reported the smell of smoke in the cockpit, spokeswoman Dori Alvarez said.

The flight was diverted to Denver, where it landed safely at 3:53 a.m. Alvarez said the cause of the smell had not been determined and the plane was being checked.
