ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – The Archdiocese of St. Louis and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod are standing by their positions against same-sex marriage despite Wednesday’s ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States.

In a statement released Wednesday morning, the Archdiocese said the Court’s decision does not change the “reality of marriage, nor does it change the Archdiocese of St. Louis’s responsibility to defend marriage as being between one man and one woman.”

The Lutheran Church also released a statement which included, “Though the ruling is not a surprise, we are saddened for our nation, even as we call our fellow Christians to faithfulness and prayer.”

The Supreme Court ruled married same-sex couples may now receive federal benefits just like married heterosexual couples.
