ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-- The Cardinals are causing quite a national stir with their best record in baseball.

The St. Louis Cardinals made national headlines Wednesday, but it's not their play on the field that is catching national attention, but rather some religious symbols repeatedly carved into the mound here at Busch Stadium.

Michael Vines is a former St. Louisan, now living in New York City, who first noticed the symbols while watching the Cardinals on his television, and that for Michael was not a one-time occurrence.

Michael Vines along with editors of found several occurrences of the cross in the pitcher’s mound dating all the way back to Opening Day, and several more times throughout the months of May and June at Busch Stadium.

A representative of the St. Louis Cardinals organization said off camera they stand by their statement that this is not an act of the ballclub itself, but of certain individuals.  They realized that their fan base is comprised of many different and diverse religions, and they welcome them all.
