(KTVI) - A man said he was attacked by several people in North St. Louis overnight.  Police said he was trying to help a driver who hit a Metro bus.

Police said that a man was standing on the sidewalk at North Newstead Avenue and St. Louis Avenue around 11:30 Thursday night.  The man saw a Cadillac rear-end a Metro bus.  According to police, the man went to check on the driver.  That is when a group of at least 10 men and women gathered and started screaming at him.

Someone in the crowd stabbed the victim twice, once in the abdomen and once in the arm.  The crowd ran off, and a witness called 911.

There was no immediate word on any injuries for any of the bus passengers or the driver of the car that hit the bus.

Police were not aware of any relationship between the driver and anyone in the crowd.  The victim said he does not know who in the crowd stabbed him.  He remained hospitalized Friday morning in serious, but stable condition.
