EAST ST. LOUIS, IL (KTVI) - The Major Case Squad activated on Tuesday to investigate the murder of a 65 year old grandfather of 9.

Relatives of George Tolliver say he retired from security guard work 3 years ago.  He lived on Marybelle Street in East St. Louis.

His son, George Tolliver Jr., said his father was known for two things, "His laugh and his joking all the time."

Lt. Steve Evans says Tolliver was shot at approximately 10:05pm on Monday night in the 800 block of North 86th street.

East St. Louis police responded to a call for multiple shots fired.  Investigators found Tolliver shot to death in the front seat of his SUV.

Relative say their loved one was dropping off friends in the neighborhood just before he was shot.  Some say they called Tolliver, 'Uncle George' because he was so friendly.

"It`s devastating," said Tolliver, Jr.  "He`s the type of person who shouldn`t have gone out like this."

Family members gathered on Tuesday to prepare funeral arrangements.   Tolliver Jr. said people caught up in a life of crime need to wake up realize that life is real.

He said anyone with loved ones around should tell them they love them because, "You never know."
