NORTH ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO. (TVI) – The Hazelwood School District is offering students a free immunization that they are required to have to enter the eighth grade.

Workers from the People`s Health Clinic gave out vaccinations against whooping cough today at the Hazelwood School District headquarters on New Halls Ferry Road.

Hazelwood school officials say Missouri state law requires that before kids start the eighth grade, they must have an updated ‘TDAP’ immunization.

The shot vaccinates against illnesses including whooping cough.

Parents we talked with are grateful for the free service.

‘Diseases spread as you know with kids- they pass it on real quick, quicker than anything else.

They don`t wash their hands, they don`t do anything else so this is really important to me because I don`t want him bringing it home either,’ said Debbie McCain whose son is going into the eighth grade at Hazelwood Central Middle School.

The Director of Health Services for the Hazelwood School District, Crystal Nelson, said about whooping cough, ‘It`s a respiratory disease so it can be very serious in untreated, it can be deadly, so that`s why we want to make sure parents are aware.’

There are religious and medical exemptions to the immunization.

The Hazelwood School District is offering other clinics besides the one earlier today.
