ELLISVILLE, MO (KTVI)-- A 21-year-old woman who pleaded guilty to putting her newborn son under a tree last year will spend the next 5 years on probation.

Kaitlin Norton pleaded guilty last month.

The judge gave her a 5 year prison sentence, but then suspended it and placed her under 5 years supervised probation, 500 hours of community service, and ordered her to undergo drug and alcohol counseling.

If Norton fails to follow through on any of the other parts of the sentence, the judge could send her to jail.

A woman found the baby bundled in a blanket under a tree in Ellisville and thought it might have been an abandoned litter of puppies.

Once she brought the baby inside, she called police.

Norton was arrested a few days later.
