AFFTON, MO (KTVI)-- The friends and family of Christopher Marks gathered in Afton Wednesday to remember the 12-year-old who was found dead in the Meramec River one year ago.

"We love and cherish him with every breath we take, and we are going through hell right now because he is gone," Mark's Grandmother Lisa Miskimon said.

Mark's Step-father, Todd Combs, gave the young boy and several other children alcohol during a float trip on August 5, 2012, according to prosecutors.

Marks got separated from the group.

"He bought them the alcohol and left my grandson," Lisa said. "He just drove the drunk kids home."

Mark's body was found in the river on August 7.

Combs was sentenced to one year in prison and two years probation.

"What that was is a joke," Lisa said.

The family is circulating a petition aimed at harsher punishments for people who "hurt children."

"We want lawmakers to get behind this, so it does not happen to anyone else," Lisa said.
