Martinez to make 1st MLB pitching start for Cards

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – The St. Louis Cardinals have recalled right-handed pitcher Carlos Martinez and left-handed pitcher Sam Freeman from Memphis. This will be Martinez’ first Major League start.

The team plays the final game in the series against the Dodgers on Thursday. The team lost to Los Angeles 13-4 on Wednesday night.

Martinez, 21, was named the Cardinals Minor League Pitcher of the Month for June. He is the 5th rookie pitcher to make a start this season, joining Shelby Miller, Tyler Lyons, Michael Wacha and John Gast.

Freeman, 26, made 24 relief appearances as a rookie for the Cardinals last season. He was on the team’s active roster for the National League Wild Card game last season, but did not appear.

Martinez wears uniform # 62 and Freeman #71.
