(KTVI)-Overnight, St. Louis police responded to what was essentially a street brawl involving a large number of people outside a home in the 3900 block of Louisiana in south St. Louis. Around 12:30am, police arrived on scene and began to break up the crowd.

As the scene was being cleared, an officer then saw a man with a gun walk up and start shooting at a group of people, striking one man in abdomen and chest.  As the gunman fled, he saw the officer and pointed the gun at him. That police officer opened fire but did not hit the suspect, who  dropped the gun and ran.

The shooting victim, a 26-year-old black male, was rushed to an area hospital and is in critical but stable condition.

The suspect, identified only as a 23-year-old black male, was caught a few blocks away and is in custody.  Police continue to investigate.
