SPANISH LAKE, MO (KTVI)-- The new head football coach at Hazelwood East High School has big plans for his team.

Not only is Aaron Whittington a graduate from Hazelwood East, he received a full football scholarship for UCLA and graduated with a history degree.

“You can’t necessarily gauge everything off of wins and losses. You gotta get these kids college and career ready,” said Coach Whittington.

The Spartans are coming off a 6-5 season, but to Coach Whittington it’s more than just winning games.

“We take care of our business in the classroom. Guys are graduating on time, meeting the expectations of the teachers, that’s really where the wins are,” he explained.

Coach Whittington is using his experience to inspire his players.

“The pyramid of success, you know loyalty, hard work ethic, and things of that sort, be the corner stone. I try to fuel that and put it in a way where they can use that to be successful on the field, classroom, and community,” he stated.

The Spartans’ first game is at home on August 31st against Mc Cluer.
