(KDAF) – Parents in Germany will soon be able choose between three gender options on their kid’s birth certificate: male, female, or blank.

It’s meant to give inter-sex kids the right to choose their gender identity later in life. Intersex is a variation in chromosomes or genitals that prevents someone from distinctly identifying as male or female.

The new law goes into effect in November.
