CHICAGO, Ill. (CNN) – An Illinois man is being held on five-million dollars bond in connection with the death of a baby boy.

26-year-old Demetries Thorpe is the boyfriend of the baby’s mother.

He told police he’d been trying to quiet the child — Joshua Summers.

Mike Nerheim, Lake County State’s Attorney:  “Joshua was crying, he went in, placed his hand over his mouth for about 10 to 15 seconds until he stopped breathing. He then placed Joshua’s body in a backpack, put the backpack out the window, took the backpack down the alley behind the residence, placed the backpack containing Joshua in a garbage can.”

Thorpe has been charged with murder.

Police are currently searching a landfill for the body.

The Round Lake Illinois Chief of Police called the search, “worse than looking for a needle in a haystack.”

Authorities say the child’s mother has been cooperating, and is not a suspect in the case.
