Rumor prompts random backpack check at Hazelwood West

HAZELWOOD, MO (KTVI) -Students at Hazelwood West High School had to have their backpacks checked Friday morning after rumors surfaced that a student might bring a weapon to school.

Hazelwood West principal Dennis Newell sent out a letter Friday morning informing parents of the situation at the school.   According to the letter, school officials were made aware of a rumor  that a student was planning to bring a weapon to school.

The type of weapon was not specified in his letter to parents.

Police and administrators conducted a random backpack check Friday morning.

It is unknown if any weapons were found.
