Mariner pitcher James Paxton stymied the Cardinals for six innings as Seattle beat the Cardinals 4-1 on Saturday night at Busch Stadium. Paxton in just his second Major League start allowed just two hits in six innings pitched. Cardinals starter Michael Wacha suffered his first Major League loss. Wacha went five innings, allowing two runs.

The only offensive bright spot for the Cardinals was Matt Carpenter. His eighth inning double was his 50th of the season. Carpenter would later score on a wild pitch, pulling the Cards to withing 3-1 of the Mariners at the time.

Pittsburgh and Cincinnati both won their games on Saturday, so the NL Central division looks like this with 14 games remaining; Cardinals and Pirates tied, Reds two and a hald games back.
