ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-- A North County homeowner spends almost $4,000 to stop a roof leak. She's really frustrated because he won't come back to fix his mistakes. The job started in June 2012. Over a year later she calls Contact 2 for help.
During the March 2013 storms, Janet Morrow noticed her roof leaked. She thought it was odd because months before she hired a roofer for a different leak.
"He came back one time, and he put a few shingles up to try to make it stop. And when I called to let him know that it started in another part of my house. He never would come back," she stated.
The quality of his work was less than satisfactory. Contact 2 reached out to Jim Compton of Compton Roofing. We asked him to check it out. He fixed some problem areas. "They put shingles on a flat roof section, which is totally taboo in the industry. We had to remove all the shingles and put on the proper roofing material," he said.
Compton says the leaks should stop. But the original contractor was pretty sloppy on the siding as well. Compton says know the law, especially if the contractor is offering enticements.
"I`m going to take care of your deductible. I`m going to give you a free upgrade. The adjuster can`t bring a roofing contractor in, and work together with him to represent them in behalf of the homeowner," he continued.
And finally consumers now have five days instead of three to change their mind after signing a contract. Protecting the consumer is why Compton stepped forward. He says Janet Morrow was a victim of circumstance and sold a bill of goods. Remember you should not turn over the original insurance check to contractors. They should be paid in installments. And you don`t want to fall for any incentives.
