Train Derails in Smithboro, Illinois

(KTVI) - A train has derailed in Smithboro, Illinois, just east of Greenville, IL.   It happened just after 6:00 a.m. Monday morning.

At least eight cars are derailed. At this time, it is unclear how the derailment happened or if there are any injuries.

A message from the Greensboro Fire Protection District Facebook Page reads:

"There has been a train derailment in Smithboro. It is advisable to avoid the area currently. We do not know what the train was carrying or any hazardous information. we will attempt to update this post as information comes in. People are advised to avoid the area."

Smithboro is located about 50 miles northeast of St. Louis.
