EUREKA, MO (KTVI)-- The Eureka High School varsity soccer team for boys had two reasons to celebrate Tuesday.  Fans ran onto the field at the Fenton Soccer Park after their team defeated Vianney 1-0.  The victory came on penalty kicks after the score was tied 0-0 after two overtime periods.

The other reason to celebrate was a successful fundraising effort.  The team helped raise money to buy an estimated 500 pounds of beef jerky to send to soldiers in Afghanistan.

"We asked the soldiers what they wantedand they said beef jerky," said soccer player Kyle Gardner.

Coach Gary Schneider said his team raised another $2,100 to pay for shipping but then received word from Brad Baker with Husky Corporation in Pacific that they could cover the shipping.

"That allowed us to buy even more beef jerky," said Gardner.

Schneider said the fundraising took place throughout the fall in a variety of ways including during football games.  He said his team really took to the missionand he`s proud of their efforts on and off the field.

Eureka will now play Saint Louis University on Saturday during the next round of the soccer playoffs.
