Severe storms rock St. Louis region, tornado damage in SE Illinois
(KTVI) – Windy, spring-like weather Sunday brought fast moving, severe thunderstorms to the St. Louis region. Confirmed tornadoes have done significant damage in Clinton, Washington, and Marion Counties in Illinois, where the towns of New Minden, Holyton, and Centralia appear to be hard hit. National Weather Service survey crews have been dispatched to the area.
Across the region, hail and high winds have left their mark across the landscape. Numerous trees and power lines are down in south St. Louis and many intersections are blocked.
Wind gusts of 70 mph or higher took many drivers by surprise Sunday afternoon. There have been many reports of cars blown off the road and a tractor-trailer overturned just off the Poplar Street Bridge in Illinois.
