During the Mike Matheny contract extension press conference on Wednesday at Busch Stadium, Cardinals GM John Mozeliak made it official that Chris Carpenter is retiring from the Cardinals and Major League Baseball. Carpenter has battled injuries the past few seasons, did not pitch for the Cardinals in 2013, but was invaluable to the young pitchers on the Cards staff during this past season with pitching instruction and strategy.

Carpenter attempted a comeback this past summer pitching for Class AA Springfield and Class AAA Memphis, but the nerve pain returned to Carpenter's pitching arm and neck ending his comeback try.

Carpenter won the 2005 NL Cy Young Award in 2005 while pitcher for the Cardinals. Mozeliak indicated he and Carpenter would talk soon about a position for Carp with the Cardinals.
