ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - Our partners at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch wanted to help with your family’s Black Friday logistics. Tuesday, workers started the day assembling sales circulars.

The Post’s production manager, Norm Loraine, looked across the plant which revved up at 6:30 Tuesday morning.

“This is the last shift before our Thanksgiving package,” seconds streamed across conveyor belts overhead. “280,000, I believe, we’re printing.”

The sales department at the Post had been working since August to fill the most coveted section of this Thursday’s edition: the Black Friday circulars. And at the presses in Maryland Heights, these men and women have been working on putting the section together for a while.

“We’ve been working on this since, basically, November 15,” said Tracy Rouch, from the paper’s marketing department. “So, it’s been a long process, but it’s one of our biggest days of the year.”

It’s the Thanksgiving issue, but workers had to get the papers on newsstands by noon Wednesday.

“They all have been working a lot, a lot of hours,” Loraine said. “I mean, double shifts, long heavy hours.”

Both Loraine and Rouch said the activity was not just about saving a few bucks or even employees making a little extra money right before the holiday shopping season. It was about a generational ritual.

“Our family does it every year,” Rouch smiled. “As soon as dinner is over, the paper kind of gets spread apart and everyone starts planning their Christmas lists.”

“Yes. My wife and my new daughter in law go through them all the time,” Loraine said. He also said he would leave the Black Friday lines to the ladies in the family.

Rouch said the ads were top-secret until the papers go on sale. But, she encouraged readers to check out the circulars carefully. Hidden inside was an opportunity to win a $5,000 gift card.
