(KTVI) - Fast food workers continue their fight for better wages.  They're staging a one-day strike across the U.S. Thursday.

They're demanding $15 an hour.  Strikers say there are $36,000 fast food workers in St. Louis and their average pay is $8.71.

The person stupid enough to think that filling a soda- pop cup is worth more than many college degrees is probably as uneducated as the person who thinks one measures a demographic of people in monetary value.

  • Jeff erxleben

Dumb… I don’t see anyone else get tips when thy get paid crappy. Soldiers,cops,firefighters….etc. we actually do something important even when we actually earn it. Cry babies.

Both my girls took school seriously and so both were making more than $10/hr. when they were only 18. They continued their education and now they have moved onto real jobs that pay well. This ‘minimum wage’ group that is being suckered by the unions should have spent more time getting educated and then they would be able to command a higher pay.

Don’t expect handouts from others if you aren’t willing to invest in your own future.

It’s never too late to invest in YOUR future.

$15 an hour for a job which requires zero skills. These businesses have already had to accept EBT cards in order to remain open in poverty stricken areas and you want the workers to make $15 an hour? These people are crazy.

  • FBHO

Fire every one of them and replace them with robots. Then maybe, just maybe, I can get my food as I ordered it. I SAID NO PICKLES JACKA$$!!

    • justin

maybe if they made 15 a hour they would care to get your food right but honestly the we work harder then most educated jobs do. sit at a desk and type all day or sit in a bank and count money those are so big jobs but don’t require you to be movign all day on ur feet for 8 plus hours sweating over a hot stove and the reason soem of them work there is because we have children and can’t afford to go to school and if we made 15 hour maybe we could go to college and be more sucessfull but makign 8 dollars a hour barely pays the bills i need to get a second job even to make rent please don’t try to down anythign youv never had to go threw some people work all there life and will never make over 15 a hour. i know some guy who has worked at walmart for 20 years and still only makes 15 dollars a hour. i mean come on people the world is goign down hill why not make it better for some people.

Justin, after reading your comment it’s easy to see why you’re only making minimum wage. The fourth grade must have been really hard for you as I don’t think you got past it.

  • Shawn

We know this is a lost cause, but if something should happen will most of these employees lose their EBT cards? That will be the next protest! They will not be able to make it on $15 an hour without an EBT card!

I remember at age 10 that flipping burgers was not the path I wanted to take. I knew the pay was not good and overall it is a less than desirable career path that would not provide for a reasonable living. I made sure to get good grades and get the scholarships I needed to earn a post high school education.

Here I am today making a comfortable living at a corporate office. This is a direct result of the choices I made in life, beginning from childhood.

Fast food burger flipping is for part-time work. This includes high school/college students and retired folks wanting to do something out of dire boredom. This is NOT for for an individual with a family or housing to support.

Instead of standing out in the streets holding signs and fussing over burger flippin’ pay, they need to fix the problem, not the blame. A little bit of due diligence and hard work will pay off in the end.

I got’s me a Mcjob , and it would be Mcnice if they would over MC-pay me for a position that any Mcidiot could Mcdo!

  • Big George

If they raise the minimum wage to $15, then I will apply for a part time job at a fast food restaurant. I have a high school diploma and college degree. Many other educated individuals would do the same. Therefore, these people that are protesting wouldn’t even be offered the job. Instead of marching around in the sleet/freezing rain, maybe they should devote some time to educating themselves. In the end, everyone would be better off for it and these individuals would be able to obtain a better paying job.

Is it wrong or racist to say that most of these protests (in the St. Louis area anyway) took place in predominantly African-American neighborhoods?? The fast food & retail jobs in places like West County, Chesterfield, and Ladue don’t pay any better yet there were no protests in those areas. Maybe a little more education will get you a better paying job with decent benefits. I’m not racist, but there seems to be a gap of some sort here.

These jobs are entry level, unskilled jobs manned by entry level, unskilled workers. They do not deserve more than what they are already being paid. If they want more money then they need to make themselves more marketable in the job market by learning skills and trades that they do not currently have.

  • geoff

The only white person I saw, the camera man. lol Ummm I think lets call this what it is, a black president, so the blacks come out and take full advantage of the oppression that their so called ancestors suffered. lol. Give me a break. No education, no pay raise, minimum wage for you and that’s it.

  • shawnee

I’m 18 and could really use the job they are takIng for granted! If you need more money, get another job. most people a generation before these people had multiple jobs. stop spending your money on drugs, alcohol, and the most fashionable clothes. don’t be afraid of shoppIng at GoodwIll or hand me down stores. Stop buyIng J’s and mIss me jeans.

  • Melissa T

I worked in the fast food Business for over 15 years, I don’t feel they should make more than $9-$11 and that is on the high end for a new cook position like at Ruby Tuesdays , or Apple Bees something similar, Not MC Donald’s, or Burger King, the Typical fast food joint! They want Big $$$ They need to be in a Union and Pay just like every other American does to Live in this Wonderful country!!

  • Connie Dunn

Let’s see…you are untrained and uneducated. These are what we call ENTRY LEVEL jobs, people! They were never intended to be careers for heaven’s sake! As a teen and college student. We used those jobs to WORK OUR WAY UP to something better. You want $15 an hour? I don’t think so…Connie

  • Kelley

These workers are pathetic! Are you serious? People with nursing skills who work with elderly and disabled don’t even make 15.00 an hour and they want us to support their 15.00 dollar an hour demand? Oh PLEASE. You are making hamburgers!!!!!!!! And half the people protesting don’t even speak our English language! Get real people. Be happy you even have a job. Unreal. What a joke. These fast food workers haven’t spent any time in a certified nurse course, or licensed vocational nursing course, or a pharmacy tech course, and yet they want the SAME pay rate these skilled and trained workers want? NO WAY. Get back to work and quit complaining. This is total waste of time and theatrical demands aren’t going to change public opinion of people with a GED or high school diploma flipping burgers!

  • Brent

Can we even call it fast food anymore, one night it took me 30 minutes to get my food at a McTrash, and you could see all the employees inside with their friends goofing off.

  • notOkay

Minimum wage jobs were NOT CREATED TO SUPPORT A FAMILY or support any real living situation. Minimum wage jobs are for young people who aren’t ready for a career or for people who get laid off and still need a source of income until they’re back on their feet. These lazy fucks need to quit bitchin and whining and get a CAREER instead ofncomplaining. AT LEAST YOU HAVE A JOB. there’s a lot of people in this country who would LOVE your $8/he job so quit your selfish bitchin and move on.

  • James2812

Pfft, they don’t know what they have. Be lucky you have a job. I haven’t went to college yet and I’m 20, but I landed a job operating a loader at a concrete plant that pays twice as much as these guys are making now. IF THE MINIMUM WAGE GOES UP…GUESS WHAT ALSO GOES UP! THE COST OF LIVING! Then you will be back in this position again demanding another pay raise. Either accept what you already have and be thankful for it, or find another job.

  • Jake

If I make $15/hr from the fast food restaurants. Why should I go to the school? I will flip hamburgers all day long when I am old enough to work…

  • Tom

They need to be pressing their leader, king liar barak obama to bring back manufacturing so that there could be real good paying jobs. Fast food work is for teens in high school, everyone is missing the real problem.
