JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (KTVI) – The Missouri Supreme Court has set January 29, 2014 as the execution date for Herbert Smulls, convicted of killing Stephen Honickman in 1991. Honickman was 51 years-old at the time of the murder and was employed as a jeweler in Chesterfield at F&M Crown Jewels.

Business was conducted by appointment only, and Smulls had made an appointment for 11 pm on July 27, 1991, to meet with Honickman, and his wife about buying a diamond ring for his fiancée.

Smulls and an accomplice went into a hallway to discuss purchasing a ring, emerging with a handgun shooting Honickman wife 3 times and Honickman several times.

Honickman later died at a hospital.
