ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – The Humane Society has issued a warning for St. Louis area residents after receiving several reports about coyote attacks on small dogs.

Coyotes are common in the state, including urban and suburban areas.

The Humane Society says they’ve received reports of 6 pets attacked in the Ladue area by coyotes, and a couple of sightings in Florissant.

This is mating season, and that’s why the coyotes are out in greater numbers.

The Humane Society, along with the Endangered Wolf Center suggest keeping a closer eye on pets from dusk until dawn. They also suggest you take your cats inside at night.

They also say don’t leave pet food outside.
